Don’t forget to look at the Chelsea Offside Rantbox covering this game.
Di Mateo started the following:
“Cech, Bosingwa, Ivanovic, Terry, . . . , Cole, . . . , Lampard, Mikel, Ramires, Mata,
Kalou, Drogba” (shyam, Chelsea Offside comments)
Using a 4-2-3-1, the first 5 minutes were flat-footed with Liverpool being in control but non-threatening. And then we finally touched the ball and the balance started to shift in our favor. Much like Liverpool, we were still non-threatening.
And then the counter-attack through Mata to Ramires and beats Reina on the near post driven nice and low. Chelsea up 1-nil, 11′.
In the 13′ minute, Liverpool nearly earned an equalizer, but Ivanovich proves his worth and keeps them out.
Apart from a loose Suarez half-field shot and a Ramires dipping skyrocket that posed little threat to Reina, the next 7 minutes were relatively quiet.
The next 10 minutes, semi-quiet. Blues looking dominant, but Reds still pressing.
The next 10 minutes, no goals, but plenty of activity for both sides.
Liverpool picking up momentum in the last 5 minutes of the first half.
Halftime ends 1-nil Chelsea.
No changes to either team to start the second half.
First five minutes laden with fouls.
Lampard feeds Drogba on the left of the 18 who puts it low to far post for the second goal of the game. 2-nil Chelsea, 51′.
Liverpool scored via an Andy Carroll sub, in large part due to Bosingwa’s costly mistake in the back. 2-1, 64′.
No Chelsea productivity over the next five minutes. Liverpool are on the rise thanks to Carroll’s invention.
The next 5 minutes have seen lots of Liverpool pressure on Cech’s goal.
Meireles off for Ramires. Questionable sub–should have come on for Kalou.
Liverpool found the back door into the box in the 80th minute, but they couldn’t do anything with it. Blues need to raise the bar.
Carroll hit the ball well with his head, but Cech stopped it over the line; replay shows it nearly went over the line, but in fact it did not thanks to Cech.
Five minutes left of regulation. Liverpool very much in charge, but Chelsea still have the lead.
Essien for Mata? Torres for Drogba? Nope.
Free kick on edge of 18 for Liverpool. Unbelievable. Looks like Mikel was fouled, but referee says Mikel made the offense. The Blues wall does its job and prevents Gerrard’s strike from being effective.
Liverpool relentless with 2 minutes left of regulation.
Malouda on for Mata at the 90th minute; 5 minutes added time.
Two minutes left of added time. Liverpool still pressing, and Chelsea have no response, looking very trapped.
Drogba earns a free quick about 25 yards out. Lampard’s ensuing free quick was difficult for Reina but still no production.
Time runs out, Chelsea wins 4th FA Cup in 6 years, 7th total. Drogba becomes the first player to score 4 goals in 4 different FA Cup Finals. Terry becomes first captain to win 4 FA Cup titles with the same team.
Well done, Blues! Keep that Blue flag flying high! Silverware, baby!
