Club History: Chelsea

I’m a relatively new fan of soccer entertainment being that I only just started watching soccer in February 2010. Any reader of this blog knows that I support Chelsea, Inter Milan, and Real Madrid. As a new fan, I know nothing of these clubs’ history. It’s time to change that. I am going to write up my own history reports of the three clubs, starting with Chelsea.

Chelsea has a very good and definitive source on its own history made readily available on its website. Available topics are team history, previous kits, previous badges, previous managers, previous players, previous matches, and more. Unbelievable stuff.

According to the Team History: Introduction page, Chelsea was founded in 1905. This club is nearly 110 years old. The club has been at Stamford Bridge in West London ever since its conception. Fifty years later, Chelsea won the first division for the first time. Another fifty years later, Chelsea won the first division for the second time. Since then, Chelsea have won it twice more, making first division champions titles a count of 4. The oldest tournament in the world, the FA Cup, has been claimed by Chelsea 6 times, the first of which was in 1970 and the most recent 2010. Before being absolved, Chelsea won the Cup Winners’ Cup twice, first in 1971 and again in 1998. Also in 1998, Chelsea won the Super Cup in 1998. The Blues won the League Cup four times: 1965, 1998, 2005, and 2007. Chelsea have also won the Charity Shield twice, first in 1955 and second in 2000, and the Community Shield twice, in 2005 and 2009, respectively. The club has won 21 titles in all.

As far as attendance is concerned, Stamford Bridge has seen an officially recorded 82,905 people to attend the Arsenal derby in 1935. However, with seating regulations, it currently hosts a capacity of 41,837. Stamford Bridge is located in Fulham, London. The stadium was nearly lost in the 1970s and 1980s, but with the plummet of the real estate market in 1992, a non-provit organization named Chelsea Pitch Owners was formed and in 1997 the Bridge was purchased and secured.

A wonderful synopsis is available at Wikipedia.
